Black Hops Recognised As One Of Australia’s Fastest Growing Companies

For the past 31 years respected business publication The Australian Financial Review (AFR) have published their Fast 100 and Fast Starters lists, in recognition of the fastest growing businesses and start ups in Australia over the previous 12 months.

This was our first year of being eligible for the Fast 100 list, so we were stoked to be recognised as #24 in this year’s honour roll of fastest growing Australian companies!

To meet the criteria for entry into the Fast 100, we needed to demonstrate that we’d started trading before 1 July 2016 and had turnover greater than $500,000 between 2016 and 2017. We also needed to provide three full years of revenue data and we were then ranked according to the compound annual growth rate achieved over that period (in our case 105.6%).

Being recognised as one of Australia’s fastest growing companies gives us immense pride about the journey we’ve been on, ever since we started out as three mates giving this brewing caper a red hot crack and sharing everything we’ve learnt along the way. Since selling our first homebrew keg in 2014 we’ve grown at over 100% each year, now employing over 80 people and distributing beer throughout the country while still remaining majority founder owned, independent and having no institutional investors or venture capital input.

With half of this year’s growth rates impacted by the pandemic we were especially delighted with the result, with well diversified businesses and those from the e-commerce sector making up a large proportion of this years’ top 100 list. On the Fast Starters list (in recognition of newer start-ups), Two Bays Brewing Co from Victoria also bucked the trend to make the top 20 – another mighty result for our industry. Speaking of Mighty, listed Craft beer and spirits company Might Craft also made the Fast Starters list coming in at #15.

For those interested, the top ranked company in the AFR Fast 100 list was Grow Finance, a non-bank lender to small-to-medium businesses. And a big shout out to our accountant Shaun, from Air Accounting, who also made the list (coming in at number 48 on the list).

And a big thanks to all of our customers, suppliers, investors and supporters for getting behind us and continuing to support what we do, you’re all a massive part of our success and we look forward to growing even more while continuing to make the best beer we can.
