Black Hops Takes Out Best Craft Brewery in Beer Cartel Survey

Since 2016 the Beer Cartel Craft Beer Survey has been the major barometer of Australian craft beer drinking trends.

Over 14,000 Australian craft beer drinkers took part in the 2022 survey, which ran between July and September and asked participants a range of questions relating to their attitudes towards craft beer as well as their beer related purchasing and consumption habits. The results help provide an overview of the ever-growing Australian craft beer market and the directions in which it is heading.

The 2022 survey results were recently announced and we were over the moon to be awarded the honour of Best Craft Brewery! We initially took out this award in 2020, so to once again be recognised in this way by the Australian craft beer drinking public is both humbling and a validation of our journey so far.

In addition our Biggera Waters brewery and taproom (BHII) was voted Queensland’s favourite brewery venue (by state).

Be sure to check out the full list of results and survey findings at Beer Cartel, as it gives a great insight into the industry and its current trends. Here’s just a few of the key findings:

  • While Pale Ales remain the most widely consumed style (82%), Hazy / New England IPA’s have increased their foothold significantly (78%) in the proportion consuming the style.
  • Alcohol-free continues to grow strongly as a segment, with 32% of respondents having consumed an alcohol-free beer in the last 12 months, up from 15% in 2020.
  • Online purchasing of craft beer remains high, with 57% of respondents having purchased beer online in the last 12 months, up from 40% in 2019.

Cheers to everyone who participated in the survey and thank you for supporting independent breweries like us.
